A seashell grows an exoskeleton for its soft body to reside in. This protective skeletal structure is composed of calcium carbonate secreted by the organism.
This sculpture expresses a seashell shape using 21 layers of laminated plywood and aluminum strips with bolted joints. The carved wood surface mimics a spiral growing pattern, while the metal strips give the shell a sense of expansiveness in space.
